Bigger Things Mean Bigger Responsibilities

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7: 13 – 14

Biology was not my favorite subject in school especially in secondary school. And I was doing good, did my best to study to get good grades up until when we got introduced to Classification of organisms topic. Somehow I couldn’t memorize the scientific names, let alone understood it. How many of you know what I am talking about? It was really hard to pronounce, memorize, or write for some of them! I tried all ways of studying to pass that class up to my Secondary National Examination…mmh..

Thank God, I don’t have to study and take the test for it today, yay! So my notes through Google search say, for the classification of animals, these were what we were supposed to know and memorized in school for each animal; it’s kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species, and also I think whether they have backbone (vertebrates) and without backbone (invertebrates). And for each living organism classification; it’s domain, kingdom, cell type, cell structures, number of cells, mode of nutrition, and so on. I mean really? It was too much, but I remember doing my best to get at least a passing grade score.

Biology is not my specialty, but I know some characteristics of some organisms and living things through life experiences and observations. And I understand now why it is important to know all the characteristics of these organisms and living things. They are part of our lives so we must as well understand them for our own good and benefit.

What I like about is that we are the most favored ones by God. I am talking about us, human beings. We truly stand out from other living things, and organisms living on this planet earth. Like the way King David put it in the Bible; in the book of Psalm chapter 139 verse 14, he said, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” And we all can agree with him one hundred percent and appreciate God together for His wonderful works.

When God created us, He made sure we stand out from all other organisms and living things. In fact the book of Genesis chapter 1 verse 26 reading from Amplified Bible version says, “Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.”

God has bestowed and entrusted us with so much that’s why He expects so much from us among all other organisms and living things on this planet.

In Luke chapter 12 verse 48 from the Living Bible version, The Lord Jesus said “Much is required from those to whom much is given, for their responsibility is greater.” The same passage in New Living Bible translation says, “When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.”

Just ask or study the lives of the people you know who have done great and big things already in this life. People who are productive and successful, and effective; those who held higher positions of authority and leadership of some kind. The people you admire because of their successes; just ask them, and they will tell you, “If you want much from this life much is required from you.”

The same Bible passage, Luke chapter 12 verse 48, in The Message Bible translation says, “Great gifts mean great responsibilities; greater gifts, greater responsibilities!”

If you have been given much, definitely much will be required from you. This is also the reason why with given responsibilities, our fellow human beings, or our companies, our job positions and titles, social, political, and economic status, expect much from us. And we all know that the measure of authority required and responsibilities given for being a President is different from the measure of authority required and responsibilities given for being an accountant.

So even God expects something from us given to what He has bestowed and entrusted us with. And for us Christians we believe, whatever God has given us is to fulfill His purposes for us on this planet earth. God gives gifts, talents, and basically everything so that we can live fully for Him and for the common good of humanity. He also wants us to be responsible, not only for the spiritual gifts, but behavioral, physical, relational, mental, intellectual, financial, and so on.

Have you ever heard of the Lord Jesus’ famous parable of the talents or three servants, which is written in the book of Matthew chapter 25 verses 14 to 30? It’s an eye-opener of what God is expecting from us.

From the book of Matthew 25:14-29 Living Bible (TLB), it says that “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going into another country, who called together his servants and loaned them money to invest for him while he was gone.  “He gave $5,000 to one, $2,000 to another, and $1,000 to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities—and then left on his trip. The man who received the $5,000 began immediately to buy and sell with it and soon earned another $5,000. The man with $2,000 went right to work, too, and earned another $2,000. “But the man who received the $1,000 dug a hole in the ground and hid the money for safekeeping.

“After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to him to account for his money. The man to whom he had entrusted the $5,000 brought him $10,000. “His master praised him for good work. ‘You have been faithful in handling this small amount,’ he told him, ‘so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Begin the joyous tasks I have assigned to you.’

“Next came the man who had received the $2,000, with the report, ‘Sir, you gave me $2,000 to use, and I have doubled it.’ “‘Good work,’ his master said. ‘You are a good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over this small amount, so now I will give you much more.’

“Then the man with the $1,000 came and said, ‘Sir, I knew you were a hard man, and I was afraid you would rob me of what I earned, so I hid your money in the earth and here it is!’ “But his master replied, ‘Wicked man! Lazy slave! Since you knew I would demand your profit, you should at least have put my money into the bank so I could have some interest.  Take the money from this man and give it to the man with the $10,000. For the man who uses well what he is given shall be given more, and he shall have abundance. But from the man who is unfaithful, even what little responsibility he has shall be taken from him.”

The Lord Jesus in this parable tells about three men who were entrusted with some money, but also in some other Bible translations say talents. Two of the men were diligent and invested the money or talents and doubled it. But the third man was afraid therefore buried what he was given. The first two men were rewarded and praised for their diligence while the third man was rebuked. So the Lord Jesus concluded “For the man who uses well what he is given shall be given more, and he shall have abundance. But from the man who is unfaithful, even what little responsibility he has shall be taken from him.” God expects us to be faithful even with the little we have that He has entrusted us with. We should be the best we can be and do the best we can with what we have in our hands. When we go an extra mile, God always notices our willingness even when we think we are being unnoticed by others.

It is during College I was introduced into the concept of Blue and Red Ocean strategies which basically say, in The Red Ocean which is where every industry or business is somehow today, everything is predetermined; there is a defined market, defined competitors, and a typical way to run a business in any specific industry.  And the sharks in this ocean are always fighting each other for the same preys.

The Blue Ocean, on the other hand, is calm, smooth, with lots of food and little or no competition. This is where everyone would like to be and yes, it can be possible for you and me. This is for the stand out people awards zone including the father, mother, husband, wife, teacher, sister, brother, friend, neighbor, and you name it. And for the great people zone, for those who have accomplished big dreams and achieve great things for the benefit of many people, for example; President Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., your favorite Pastor, and so many other.  For the most successful people and businesses zone, the ones who are doing really big and successful, if you read Forbes magazine, you probably have a guess. The most innovative and creative people zone, here you can put Michael Jackson, Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, and many other. Also for creative and innovative businesses, there is Apple, Microsoft, and so on.

And for The Blue Ocean people, yes, it is true, God had His part to play for their success, but they also had their part. Some of them really worked hard, scarified a lot, faced many challenges, but yet were determined, committed, and strive day and night to achieve what they have achieved.

There is this funny quote by Albert Einstein that says, “Everybody is a Genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Hahaha…It is funny, but it is also true. Fish were created to live in water and swimming in different dimensions.

The good thing about us is that we are not limited like other living organisms. We are the most favorable God’s wonderful creatures and creations on the planet earth. Once we discover what we love to do, our God-given purposes and callings, gifts, talents, skills that we have learned and developed, if we decide and be determined enough to pursue them,  with the help of God, we can accomplish great things in this life.

In one of his seminars and teaching videos, Les Brown quoted saying “People that are hungry believe that always strive to get on top in life because it’s the bottom that is overcrowded. People who are hungry know, in order to be successful, you have got to be willing to do things others will not do so that you can have or accomplish things tomorrow others won’t have.”

William A. Ward has also been quoted saying “Recipe for success: Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing; prepare while others are playing; and dream while others are wishing.”

Warren Buffet, one of the wealthiest people on the planet in this current era  has also been quoted saying “The most important investment you can make is in yourself. Very few people get anything like their potential horsepower translated into the actual horsepower of their output in life. Potential exceeds realization for many people. The best asset is your own self. You can become to an enormous degree the person you want to be.”

If you want to stand out and set yourself apart from your competition, first, you must and need to find out what gifts, talents, abilities, or skills that you have. What is it you can do that make you stand out? And once you find it or them, because it could be more than one skill, talent, gift, then the next step is to learn to master that and invest on it. Be willing to stretch yourself to do it with an excellence.

And from my own experiences I can tell you, it’s important to concentrate and focus on that you are good at and you love to do. If you really love what you do, chances are, you will be able to stretch yourself and go extra miles to discover your potential, and what God has in store for you regardless of the challenges that you will be facing, regardless of how big and hard it will be. Day and night you will strive for it. And it will be one of the first things you think about to do when you wake up in the morning, and one of the last things you think about how to improve it the following day when you go to bed in the night.

So as we continue to invest on and develop ourselves to become the persons we want to become, the next thing we need to know as once Tony Robbins said, ‘we need to give more value.’  In one of his video teachings he said that “Today most people are sick and tired of advertising because it is everywhere. Today what creates marketing is when you don’t just market, but you add value to people. You do something, you teach them, you give them insight, you give them something valuable that cost them nothing and when they see you as the person that adds value, and they will want you to supply more information, more experience, more products, and more services.”

If you want to have much, you must become more, but in order to earn more, you have to do more, and give more value. The more value you give to people, the more they will be willing to pay for it.

I will give you an example of Victoria Secret products; they are not cheap but yet people buy them. Victoria Secret has accumulated years of good reputation of providing the best trendy and quality products in its industry. And because of that these customers know, for what Victoria Secret is selling and offering, in order for them to get it , they are required to pay more money, so they have to be willing to pay for it, or else go shop somewhere else at cheaper prices, but get lower quality products. When you standout, it’s hard to lose customers and easy to beat your competition.

It’s easy to stand out when you do something no one else is doing. It’s easy to stand out when you are doing something nobody else has done before.

The secret to most successful businesses is they concentrate on providing quality products and services, and also giving more value to people or consumers. We can also do the same as individuals, we can invest in ourselves in order to become more, and hence give more value.

God must have given you something. You may have not realized it yet, but trust me, God is very generous. He has equipped so many people with different occupations to be Scientists, Pastors, Priests, Presidents, Politicians, Public Speakers, Trainers, Painters, Designers, Architects, Engineers, Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses, Accountants, Financial Advisers, Economists, Teachers, Professors, Inventors, Serial Entrepreneurs, Authors, Writers, Musicians,Singers, Dancers, Pilots, Beauticians, Chefs, Producers, Actors, Lawyers, Electricians, Programmers, Mathematicians,  Athletes, Contractors, and so many other professions to choose from.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has this famous quote that says, “Not everybody can be famous, but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”

Not everybody is given and has opportunities that you have. Therefore, if you know that God has given you much, most likely He also expects much from you.
