Get a Fish Net, and Learn to Fish

A friend of mine a month ago Whats-app and asked me what’s my shoe size so that she could buy me shoes. She knows that I love shoes and that’s why she wanted to buy me shoes as a gift again this time around. It’s not the first time for my friend to buy me a gift; she has bought me several gifts before. She even bought me shoes I think once or twice before, and since it was a while ago, she must have forgotten what size of shoes I wear.

My love for shoes started very long time ago. And I still love shoes till today, but honestly now days I just cannot tolerate shoes with very high heels anymore. There were times in my life the higher the heels, the sexy and appealing the shoes were to me, so I used to wear up to 6 inches high heels shoes. And I would walk in them shoes, and they would make me feel that I was running the world, and it didn’t run me. Then one day from nowhere I realized that I was only lying and fooling myself, these high heels shoes were killing me slowly and I was not running the world. My legs would ache, and my toes would ache because of them.  So, I decided that I was not going to wear shoes that are higher than 4 inches anymore, unless if I find the ones that are forgiving to me and supportive.

That day when my friend Whats-app me, I was very tempted to quickly say yes to her offer, and for her kindness to consider buying me shoes. But then I remembered that I have two pairs of shoes I bought eight months ago, during Christmas holiday that I haven’t wear them yet.

I was also taken back in those days when I was a slave when it came to shoes. I spent so much money buying shoes I didn’t really need. When I look back, I wish I could have saved some of the money, or used for something more important, or invested in some kind of an asset that was going to generate me more money even today as I speak.

So, I said no to my friend’s offer not only because I have so many shoes already, expensive designer shoes, and cheap shoes..hahaha. But to be honest, in my mind, I  also wished to tell my friend to give me that shoes money instead so that I could use it to support one of my projects, because that makes sense to me right now at this point of my life. I mean, that is what happens when you start listening and reading Robert Kiyosaki’s books, or Dave Ramsey and Suze Orman…hahaha. They all teach how to be responsible with your money and become financial successful.

This also made me realize that if you want to buy someone a gift, it’s good if you ask that person what they really want or find out what they need and like, instead of guessing. If you are considering giving someone a gift, one of the best things to give them is a gift card. If you know they like home decor things, get them the home decor store gift card of their taste. But if you don’t know, the best thing you can give them is cash or a check so that they can decide what to buy, or use the money for. Unless that person has a history of using the money in wrong things, while you want them to use the money you give them for important and valuable things, then giving them the money would not be the wisest decision.

It happened to me. I gave someone money as a way to help, I mean more than time, and then one day I found out this someone used the money to feed the alcoholism addiction. I guess you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves.

That’s why sometimes you need to be careful when people ask you to help them for their various needs. If they are untrustworthy or irresponsible people, and if you really want to help them, it’s better to go yourself and pay for it, whatever it is they need, instead of giving them the money.

I was watching the news on TV the other day, and this person said, “If you want to help someone, don’t give him the fish, but give him the fish rod or net so that he can fish for himself.” It make really sense; with the fish net, he can fish for himself more than one fish, and more than one time, and guess what, he doesn’t have to bother you again to help him, because he can now help himself.

This is a weapon most countries use to fight poverty in their countries by helping their citizens giving them the necessary education, training, and practical teaching so that they can help themselves, in return help their countries and nations. That’s why countries have specific free education systems, provide financial aids for its citizens, school loans, and you name it, and all of these are because they want to educate their people and empower them.

The best way to help someone is to equip him or her. The best way you can help someone is to teach and give that someone knowledge to help themselves. This is the same also if you want to help yourself. You need to invest in yourself.

Napoleon Hill said, “The person who stops studying merely because they have finished school is forever hopelessly doomed to mediocrity, no matter what their calling.”

In almost every career just because you finished school, it doesn’t mean you are done studying and learning. When I was working in the pharmacy as a certified pharmacy technician, I was constantly studying. There were so much to know, and every week, I think, there would be new information about a new drug that came out, or some kind of drug has to been taken out of the shelves because they found out it’s harmful to people because of its side effects. We had a fast mover drug list that we sold frequently, and the fast movers alone were enough to learn about. Then, there were other medications or drugs on the shelves that even though were not fast movers, but still, we also had to learn and know about them.

Even after you finish school, you need to continue learning for your career and personal growth, improvement, and development. There are so many things that we need to know that are not taught in schools. And the information and knowledge about them are available for us to get. Some of them free of charge, some of them you have to pay for them.

That’s why some people instead of collecting shoes, they collect books…hahaha. They don’t just collect them, they read them. They read every day about something they didn’t know before. They spend their money going to seminars, and training’s, or take classes that are specialized in some areas that they are interested in. Not only that they are constantly learning by listening to teaching CD’s, videos, and podcasts with valuable information every day. They feed themselves with information, knowledge, and wisdom whether it is for their career or personal growth, or both.

If you also want to help yourself, it’s the same way; get the fish net and learn to fish for yourself. But remember, you will also need a boat, because some fish are not found in shallow water, so you will need to have a boat to take you in deep water in order to get them. A boat here simply means something costly. For example, there are some seminars and training’s out there are ridiculous expensive, but if you asked people who attended them, they will tell you, it was worth of their every penny.

There is this interesting story from the Bible I would like to share. It is from the book of Luke chapter 5 verse 1 to 11, and it says, “One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around Him and listening to the Word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”  So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed Him.”

What a story right…? I mean, you are talking about Jesus here…hahaha. The greatest teacher of all times, the One Who did the impossible things,  and still doing the impossible things today by helping others transforming their lives, amen!

Invest your time and money to learn and study successful people who have been where you want to go, who knows things you want to know, they always leave clues. In fact most of them they will teach you how to be successful like them. They will tell you, in order to get this, you need to do this. It’s like telling you to cast your net somewhere to get the results you are looking for.
