Let me tell you something; I have been studied successful people for a while now. And yes, everyone has their own definition of success and their own perspective of it, simply because my view of success may be different to your view of success.
So I have been observing and studying these successful people, because I wanted to be like them. And I would do it directly or indirectly. Especially for the ones God has placed in my life, I would do my best to observe them and learn from them even though I never had the guts to ask some of them questions like, ‘what made you so successful?’ I preferred to observe them through their actions and reactions to things and my experiences with them. Asking them certain questions, to me was like invading their personal privacy. But if they happened to willingly share or accidentally whispered about their success, then yeah, points were taken. I also have been blessed to have good, kind, and successful people in my life who took time to advise me and inspire me to be a person I have become today.
Like I said, I have spent a lot of time studying various people, great people, successful people, influential people, because I wanted to know their secrets. I wanted to know how come they were able to reach the other side, while so many others couldn’t or are still struggling today to reach their milestones. I have been reading and listening to books, reading articles, magazines, newspapers, listening to teaching CD’s, subscribing to various podcasts and websites, not to forget TV and YouTube inspirational and teaching videos and programs.
And to this day, I am still studying and learning so that I can also have my breakthroughs. You have your dreams and goals, I have mine too. Some goals and dreams take a lifetime, meaning that sometimes we may have to wait for a while to really know whether we have lived a great life, or we have arrived; only God knows.
Like the famous Jim Rohn said, “Success leaves clues.” There are so many clues out there for us to learn so we can also be successful as well. I have put together five clues that I have discovered successful people to have in common. I have already shared some of these in brief and few in more details in my previous subjects and topics we have learned so far, but we are going to discuss them again, perhaps in a different perspective. So what are these clues?
- Successful people have a definite purpose.
Call it a mission statement, a vision statement, a goal, a dream, inspiration, and so on. The famous Napoleon Hill said, “Until a man selects a Definite Purpose in Life, he dissipates his thoughts over so many subjects and in so many different directions that they lead not to power, but to indecision and weakness.” If you don’t know your destination, where you want to go, or what you want in your life or passionate about, it’s going to be hard for you to define or describe what success is to you, and how does it looks like to you. One of the best things you can do for yourself right now is to find what it is that you want in your life, what’s your passion, or what is it you love to do or seeing yourself doing, what’s your definite purpose in life, who do you want to become, and then spend your life making it happen. I know its easy saying than done, but it’s something you need to do for yourself.
For example; it took me years to know that I wanted to write and be an author. Even after I found out I could really write things that make sense, I was still treating it like a hobby that I love. Then I found out God is a purposely God, and He doesn’t give you gifts just because…hahaha, you know what I mean. And so this desire and passion of me wanting to become a writer and an author was somehow starting to be strong in me. Therefore, I prayed to God to give me clarity of how He wants me to use the gifts He has given me. And now my focus is how can I improve and be great doing what I am doing, because I know what it is I want. So find your purpose, and get clarity.
- Successful people make decisions quickly.
And they make a move. The famous Napoleon Hill also said, “Successful people make decisions quickly (as soon as all facts are available) and change them very slowly (if ever). Unsuccessful people make decisions very slowly, and change them often and quickly.” Successful people don’t say, “Well, let me take my time, I know it works, but..I..will make my decision tomorrow, you know what…I don’t want to do it..we will see tomorrow how I am going to feel about it.” If you keep changing your mind all the time to do things, chances are they are not going to get done.
In the Bible, in the book of Luke chapter 14 verses 28 to 32, reading from New International Bible version, Jesus said, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.” “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.”
Successful people calculate the risks, get the facts, and decide quickly. So decide what you want. Determine the price you are going to pay to get it, and go and get it.
- Successful people are focused.
The famous Steve Jobs said, “The hardest thing when you think about Focusing. You think focusing is about saying “Yes.” No. Focusing is about saying “No.” And when you say “No,” you piss off people.” I know, right! How many people have you pissed off already?
I was watching this YouTube video about the famous Jack Ma, one of the richest and wealthiest man on the planet, and also the richest and wealthiest man in China right now, and this reporter asked him, “What kind of ideas he has said no to?” And this is what he said, and I quote; “I am saying no to a lot of ideas because as a CEO, I have to say no to a lot of opportunities. If I say yes, I would probably get 5000 opportunities every day. But, whether yes or no, everything is based on the mission, ‘helping doing business easier. If it’s on that we will consider.” Successful people focus on their goals and they are not easily destructed. They spend their time, money, and energy on the things that will help them achieve their goals and dreams.
Saying ‘No’ can also mean a lot of ways, depending on your situation, your goals, and your values. You may say no to late night parties because you have got to wake up early tomorrow morning because you have to go to work, or because it’s not your thing to party till late at night. You may say no to certain kind of friends’ invitation because they are bad influence to you, or because you really do not have time to hangout now days like you used to.
Just stay focused on what it is you want to achieve in your life, even when you have very tempting opportunities knocking at your door sometimes, because you know, some of them are knocking to only get you out of focus. And remember, it’s okay to say ‘no.’
- Successful people believe in something.
God has given each of us a choice; to believe in Him, or not to believe in Him, and nobody can take that away from you. It’s not my place to judge, but I was just wondering how intriguing this great mystery works. Some people believe in science, in their jobs, believe in themselves, in some life philosophies and principles such as karma, fate, or destiny, but yet, claim to deny the existence of God, or the existence of a divine highest authority. Just because God is not answering every question and answer we have for Him to work into our favor, and we fail to understand some of His reasoning, it doesn’t mean, He doesn’t exist.
Successful people believe in something. They believe somehow this something will work. They also believe in themselves that they are well capable of achieving their dreams and goals. And for those who believe in God also, they know when it comes to God, there are no limits to what they can achieve and become because what is impossible with man is possible with God.
I was listening to this another YouTube video of the famous Jack Ma, the CEO and Founder of ‘Alibaba’ speaking to these students in China I believe, and he said, “For the first three years we did not have even one dollar revenue from our business. But why it kept going ahead, going forward, because I received lot’s of emails of thanks from the customers. They said, ‘this is such a great thing, if you can keep doing that, we cannot pay you, but this thing helped us, but if you can keep on helping us, one day you will be successful.’ And I believed this.” Like many other out there, Jack Ma is a man who also started from zero, but today he is a hero, and on top of that very wealthy. Imagine if he didn’t believe one day he was going to be successful, do you think he would have made a decision to keep doing it for three years in a row without even one dollar revenue back? He probably spent lots of his money, time, energy, and talent, for three years in a row, and there was nothing in return except for the people who appreciated what he was doing, and so he continued to believe one day he will be successful.
- Successful people are consistent, committed, and disciplined.
The famous Tony Robbins said, “The path to success is to take massive determined action.” In order to be consistent, you need to be committed and also be disciplined. I have grouped these three in one because, to me they go together and are related into the same theme; you need to take action and be determined to achieve things that are worthwhile. Not only that, successful people are successful because they discipline themselves and invest on themselves today, so that they can have a better tomorrow.
Tony Robbins also said, “I believe life is constantly testing us for our level of commitment, and life’s greatest rewards are reserved for those who demonstrate a never-ending commitment to act until they achieve. This level of resolve can move mountains, but it must be constant and consistent. As simplistic as this may sound, it is still the common denominator separating from those who live in regret.” You cannot underestimate the power of consistency, commitment, and self-discipline. There are no replacements for what they can bring to the table.
In conclusion, model someone who is already successful because success leaves clues. Be constantly searching for those clues. Model also their successful strategies that you think may work for you. The fact is that the secret of successful people is in their stories. Just study and learn from them, and you will see and observe those clues.
