I like to learn from different people regardless of their color, race, nationality, etc. So it shouldn’t be a shock to you when I tell you that I am a fan of Bollywood movies. I honestly like to watch their movies because most of them have some kind of a romantic and a love story in them.
If you are already familiar with Bollywood movies, then you will know some of them have parts where people fight a lot. But don’t be fooled, even though they may look like they are action movies, most of them have really good love stories in them, at least the ones I have seen already. And please don’t ask me the names, because some of them I have to watch through subtitles, therefore, I never bother to know the names of the movies. Trust me, if I like the movie, I will remember the entire movie, from beginning to end. So that the second time around I will be the one telling other people what’s going to happen next when we are watching it…hahaha. Don’t you hate it when people do that?
What I don’t know though, is whether it’s true with their culture, or it’s just in the movies; most Bollywood movies portray the man to be a hero and he will fight the entire village, city, and the mob to get close or to be with the woman he loves. For somehow these men have to fight for their women, especially if the women came from the rich and wealthy families, and the men came from poor families. And if the man is the one who came from a rich and wealthy family, then he has to fight his family in order to marry a woman he loves who came from a poor family. Apparently it’s easier for them to marry a person of the same status and class. I’m from Tanzania, in East Africa, so I am not sure if this culture and status thing also exists in our country and culture. And if it is, it’s rarely.
Sister friends, I urge you to watch a few of really good Bollywood romantic movies, and you can Google to find some of them. When you watch at least one of them, then you will really know what I am talking about. I mean, don’t watch them if you know they are only going to make you feel like you have been settling for less…hahaha. I am not kidding; the things they will do for love will shock you. These men are portrayed to be very protective and supportive of their loved ones, and they will fight with all their strengths and might for these women. They will remove all the barriers to get to these women. They will fight for their loved ones, and would not let anyone standing between them. And of course, most of these women and loved ones also loved these men back.
It’s not just the fighting and the physical strength part, but it is also the romantic part, especially the musical parts of the movies. They will express their feelings and emotions through singing as if they are dreaming of how they want the experiences to be, but these experiences are actually happening. And they will use scripts like, “When I was drinking water this morning, I saw your face on it.” Which is some kind of a metaphor of saying something like, “I was thinking of you this morning.” And they will dance, depending on the theme and the message they want to portray. Sometimes the musical and dancing parts are so beautiful to watch. Call me old fashion and unreal, but I really like watching these movies, they usually take me out of reality and help me to imagine what it can be.
One day I was watching this YouTube video where Hrithik Roshan was invited to speak to these students in India. I am not really sure if he was making a speech, or these students just asked him a question, but he said, “In the world, you are not defined by what you do, but how well you do it. It doesn’t matter what you do, whatever you do, you do it great.”
I guess another reason why I like to watch movies is because I am inspired about these actors and actresses of how they do their acting so greatly. I am talking about all actors and actresses, of Hollywood, Bollywood, Nollywood, Asian movies, and so on.
These actors and actresses, not only can make you learn from the movies, but sometimes can also make you see yourself to be in these movies. Some of them will do their jobs so great, and you won’t even think that they are acting. You will think that these are their real lives and who they are, and someone is just shooting the video to record what is happening, talking about talent now. They will put their heart, mind, energy, and talent to it, and do it so well, like they are shaping a great piece of art.
Steve Jobs has been quoted as saying, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you will know when you find it.”
Through movies, I have also learned that when you do something, you need to give it your 100 percent, because being great or excellent in something don’t come by doing things halfheartedly.
There is this phrase by Tim Notke that says, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Therefore, most of the time even if you are talented, in order to be great at it, you need to be dedicated to it by giving your 100 percent, and work really hard, smart, and efficiently.
And like what Steve Job has said, it’s going to be hard to do great work if you don’t love what you do. It’s going to be hard to commit into something you are not passionate about. Only when you love it, you will be willing to explore your creativity to shape your great piece of art.
In the movie industry for instance, they have these awards for the best movie category, the best actress, the best actor, and nowadays they even have the worst movies, actors, and actresses, hahaha… Because there are some people who did great job than others, who stood out from the crowd, so they need to be rewarded for their distinction. They did it so well to be recognized and be distinguished from all the rest. And I bet, they were not able to do their jobs so great and excellently if they didn’t give their all, and do it wholeheartedly.
Just like the way in the Bollywood movies portray what a man will do for the woman he loves, or the people he loves, therefore, the argument is the same, when you love what you do; you will make sure you do it well, and do it great.
It doesn’t matter what you do; teaching, acting, writing, singing, building, cooking, dancing, playing musical instrument, designing, painting, I mean, I could go on. If it is what you love to do, you will find ways to do it well and be great at it.
I understand, sometimes in life we have to do things we don’t like to do, and it’s part of life. But the Bible in the book of Colossians chapter 3 verse 23 says, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Knowing this should somehow motivate you to still work hard, smart, efficiently, and do it excellently and greatly also for those things you don’t like to do just like you would have done for the things you are passionate about or love to do.
