The Secret in Becoming Excellent Perhaps in Anything

I would like to use this example that I have several times used before. Once young children notice and realize that everybody else around them is walking, and it’s important for them to do the same they will make an effort to make sure they also start walking. Maybe because they found out there are many benefits that they will gain or have if they can only be able to walk like everybody else. This realization of course comes maybe after they have already learned to sit properly by now. And then they realize, if they can sit properly maybe they can also walk and be able to move around, from one place to another.

But then they find out it’s hard to stand upright on their own right now, but yet decide this is not going to stop them from moving around, to get the toys, or looking for their mommies, and so it becomes a beginning of their crawling stage. And they will crawl for a while until it becomes natural and easy for them. After that they realize again, if they can just learn to stand up this time, maybe after practicing it more and more again even after they fall here and there, they can eventually be able to stand upright on their own. And so they do it, because it is their first time, they get scared, so they hold on to the chairs or tables, and again found out they can also stand upright.

But then, they look at the people around and they see these people standing upright alone without holding on to neither chairs nor tables, in fact they also make steps, and move from one place to another. And they say, “We can also walk, and we can start by moving one step or two to see how it goes, because it’s possible to walk, look at all these people who are walking.” And so, they stand upright and move one step and fall. But then next time they say, “If we can only move our legs like them slowly, one step at a time, we can then walk like them. This time let’s try to go up to five steps.” And they do it successful. After a lot of practices, they also become pros, and soon or later we see them not only walking, but running around. And the story goes on and on.

The famous Zig Ziglar has this famous quote that says “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you can learn to do it well.” And this example of the journey all children take to start walking and running around can prove this statement to be true.

The number one secret and ingredient that can help you get from doing things poorly to doing it well, great, and excellent, is practicing doing those things over and over again. Only after practicing you will discover what is working or not, and even after you discover it, you still need to build those tight muscles, therefore the more you keep practicing, the better you become.

Though in some critical and exceptional circumstances such as when a doctor is performing a procedure to saving someone’s life, practicing may not the best option, only because it’s not the right time for the doctor to practicing to see if he or she can do it, or this procedure works or not. At this point, people expect that the doctor already knows what he is doing, and he can save this personal life. But practicing still remains the main secret in becoming perhaps excellent in anything. Simply because the more your practice, the better you become.

Aristotle said, “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

This is why in interviews people with more experience in 2 years or more in something are better qualified candidates in any position. Because these employers, organizations, and companies know these candidates will have more to offer and somehow better than the rest because 2 years or more is somehow like saying 2 years or 5 years or 10 years of practicing something better. More years of experiences can also mean more skills.

The famous Bob Proctor said, “No amount of reading or memorizing will make you successful in life. It is the understanding and application of wise thought which counts.” Learning how to do something becomes valuable only after you have taken action steps into applying what you have learned to your life and start doing or practicing it.

Though having a degree is very important in some fields and industries, but you need to acquire experience and skills to back up your degree. This is why two people can both have the same degree and qualifications, but the one with more experience, skills, and achievements will get more pay or a higher salary than the one with lesser experience, skills, and achievements.

This is also why many people rise after so many failures in trying doing something well, only because when they tried this time they were able to succeed. The more time you fail and learn from your failures each time, the closer you get to your success.

The famous Michael Jordan said, “I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” There you go, one of the examples.

Practicing involves action. It’s very good to believe you can do it. But believing is not enough, you need to take action. You can believe all you want but if you don’t back it up with action then it will not get you far. You have got to practice what your preach..hahaha.

The famous Bruce Lee also said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” And he is right. When you practice one thing over and over again, eventually you become better it, and becomes a habit to you. Though some people are quicker and faster learners, therefore when it comes to learning and mastering things, they don’t need to do it 10,000 times to become excellent and great at something.

Even if you feel like you don’t have tools to do what you want to do, or you cannot afford to get them at the moment.  Sometimes life has a way to surprise people simply because when you continue to practicing using the tools you have on hand, for somehow the better tools will be found and come to you as you go long. The resources that you may have available now, somehow they become resourceful and a channel to bring more and new resources to you. Like Zig Ziglar has said, if it’s worth doing, you might as well do it poorly until you can learn to do it well.

Whatever it is you want to be great at, it can be in the area of your personal development, or in the area of your professional development, and et cetera; find out the best way to do it, notice what is working by practicing it over and over again until you get the best results, and this is the secret in becoming excellent perhaps in anything.
