I just can’t remember exactly when this happened, but it was a long-time ago. It was one of the weekdays; I woke up in the morning and something weird happened to me. I was very scared and I thought I was going to die. I know right…hahaha. So, I went to the hospital, but they found nothing was wrong with me. This made me even more scared, therefore the same day I decided to go to Church and see this Pastor that I know. When I arrived at the Church, the Pastor I went to see was not there, there was another Pastor. So, I told the Pastor what happened to me this morning, and I told him I was scared something like this never happened to me before and I really do not want to die. The Pastor looked at me and said, “Helen, who told you are going to die?” And I said, “Nobody, I just thought this is weird and it never happened to me, so I am scared.” He then said ‘okay let’s pray about it.’ And he started praying for me. After that he counseled me and said it was just a fear mindset that was telling me and I was not going to die. He also read me two Bible passages to meditate on, and told me to see him again the following Sunday after morning Church service.
So, on Sunday after the Church service I went to see him. The first thing he said when he looked at me was, “I see that you are alive, nothing happened than you thought.” Hahaha…, and so I laughed.
Another story is of me and this very close family member of mine that happened another time. We went to the hospital for treatment and the doctor gave us a prescription. Before we left the hospital we forgot to look at the prescription to see what it was when the doctor gave us. Somehow we trusted this doctor; we didn’t see the need to ask him about this medication he prescribed to us. But then later on after we already left the hospital, we decided to look at the prescription to know what medication he prescribed, and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Let’s just say when I looked at it for a minute I thought it was a joke. My first question was; “What kind of a respectable doctor will do such a thing?” It was written “Placebo.” Yes, the doctor prescribed the medication called ‘Placebo.’ I was like, “Have we been punked, or what?” After few hours though we got over it and started laughing.
But then later on I kept analyzing the situation and asked myself, ‘why would such a reputable doctor do such a thing to a patient?’ I went on Google and dig more about the word “Placebo.” One definition said, “Placebo is an inactive substance or other sham form of therapy administered to a patient usually to compare its effects with those of a real drug or treatment, but sometimes for the psychological benefit to the patient through his believing he is receiving treatment.” So, I said okay. Then I clicked on the word “Placebo Effect,” and it said, “The beneficial effect in a patient following a particular treatment that arises from the patient’s expectations concerning the treatment rather than from the treatment itself.” And I said, “Aha, I see.” After this I started getting the doctor’s point.
Anyway, to make a story short, this very close family member of mine became okay and was healed after a while. We didn’t bothered to go and get the “Placebo” medication, but we sure learned something that day.
There are times that our minds imagine worse things than they really are. We often fear the worst is going to happen to us. And then we seek help and after we get better we realize something was wrong with our mindsets.
When I began to realize that thoughts are seeds and our minds are the grounds that we plants those seeds or thoughts, my life began to change gradually. I really needed to change my mindset and get rid of the paranoia mindset that I used to have.
This is what I also discovered; the thoughts I have been planting in my mind honestly were not good seeds. And for a long time I have been watering some of these seeds and believed in them to the point where they became really strong holds. The sad thing was that some of them were so negative and false believing.
You see you can tell a lot about people from their actions, beliefs, or what they say or talk, and so on. You can sense anger, fear, insecurity, envy, even confidence, stability, and so many other things just by listening to them and observing their actions or reactions. This is why even this Pastor that day thought the need to counsel me first, and then to prescribed few scriptures for me to go home and meditate on. He noticed the mindset I had of imagining worse things than they really were. He knew that my mind was corrupted with some negative thoughts and beliefs that I planted since long-time ago and I needed to hear what God has to say about me and my situation. I needed to replace my old mindset with new information and knowledge.
In the Bible in book of Romans chapter 12 verse 2 reading from New Living Bible translation it says that “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
This Pastor knew the first thing I needed to do for myself and situation is to change the way I thought, therefore, he gave me those Bible scriptures and passages to read and meditate on, and he knew there were going to change me and I was going to be okay, and that paranoia I was imagining would go away. He wanted me to know that God cares for whatever was going on in my situation, and no situation is greater than Him. Worrying and freaking out was not going to help me solve anything.
Our minds are like gardens, and it’s up to us to decide whether to grow weeds to make our minds look like deserted gardens, or to grow flowers to make our minds beautiful gardens. The choice is ours. And when I say weeds, I mean negative or pessimistic thoughts, beliefs, knowledge, and information. And when I say flowers, I mean positive or optimism thoughts, beliefs, knowledge and information.
The famous Rhonda Byrne who wrote the book called ‘The Secret’ said, “Do not worry at all about negative thoughts, and do not try to control them. All you have to do is begin to think good thoughts each day. Plant as many good thoughts as you can in each day. As you begin to think good thoughts you will attract more and more good thoughts, and eventually the good thoughts will wipe out the negative thoughts altogether.”
Unless they are wildflowers, most flowers have to intentionally be planted. They don’t just appear or healthy grow; we have to intentionally plant the flower seeds, water and take care of them regularly. Same for good, positive thoughts, beliefs, and relevant knowledge and information, like Rhonda Byrne said, we also have to intentionally believe and think of them each day until they become dominating thoughts and knowledge so that they can grow to beautiful dominating flowers in our minds. But with weeds it’s different; there is no resistance when it comes to growing weeds. They are not intentionally sown and they grow where are not wanted. They are also competitive, dominating, persistent, and destructive. So it’s easy to grow weeds than flowers, and that’s why most of our gardens are more filled with weeds than flowers when are not taking care of.
Napoleon Hill said, “Every man is what he is because of the dominating thoughts which he permits to occupy his mind.”
We need to work on our mindsets and we have to be careful what we feed our minds. We can ask ourselves; what information are we reading, listening, and watching every day? Who are we allowing to influence us every day?
The famous Les Brown said, “We need to develop a spirit of optimism. We need to train our minds to serve us and create an achiever mindset. You don’t get in your life what you want; you get in life what you are. Work on your mindset and expand your vision to what’s possible because what you think about you bring about.”
Not everything is worth listening, hearing, or watching. Unless you are child, but you and I, other adults and young adults, we have been given more privileged and power to choose what to think about. As we grow we become more mature and wise, therefore not everything will be worth our time to listen, watching, or hearing. We also realize not every thought has got to stay on the ground in this case our minds, we can filter some of them and let them come from the left and leave from the right, or vice versa. And if we refuse to think about them frequently, they will not thrive and continue to grow and dominate in our minds to become our actions, habits, and beliefs.
It’s the battle of the mind, and we need to feed our minds with weapons. We need to feed our minds with better knowledge in order to win these battles of our minds.
In the Bible in the book of 2 Corinthians chapter 10 verse 3 to 5, reading from King James Bible version, Apostle Paul said, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
In the book of Proverbs chapter 4 verse 5 to 7 reading from New King James Bible version, it also says, “Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”
Many people are destroyed by lack of knowledge and understanding. When you have knowledge and understanding about something, that knowledge will be like the ground you are standing on until a better knowledge and understanding represents itself.
And like Apostle Paul said, whatever knowledge you feed your mind remember to let the knowledge of God to be the measure and validity of all things.
It’s all up to us to choose what we want to water. God has given us the power of choice to choose for ourselves what we want in our lives and for ourselves everyday and each moment.
And I know it’s hard to look at your worse situation and think positive about it. But again, it won’t help you, or do you any good if you think it’s going to get worse than it is. You have got to change your mind and think of possibilities. If God was a god of impossibilities no one would have trusted Him or sought after Him for help. With God, there are no limits and impossible things become possible, and that’s why He is God.
Do you know that saying that says, “Fake it until you make it?” You can start by doing that. You can begin by faking like most of your problems are slowly fading away because God is presenting you with solutions everyday to solve one by one.
There are so many ways to turn out a negative thought into a positive one. Let’s say for instance if it’s something to do with your personal image; you can start complimenting yourself and be grateful with what you have. You can say though my noise is big, but God has given me very beautiful eyes. With so much makeup products out there, I can also contour my nose to make it small, so it’s not a big deal.
And like Les Brown said, we need to develop a spirit of optimism. We need to train our minds to serve us and create an achiever mindset. No one is going to do that for us, we have got to do it for ourselves.
