In the Bible in the book of John chapter 15 verses 1 to 4, reading from New International Version, the Lord Jesus said that, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.”
Let’s be honest, we all love fruits, especially the sweet and healthy ones. Myself included, I am one of those people who love fruits, even the ones that taste sour, sometimes I would still eat them. My secret ingredient to these sour fruits is salt. Take that sour fruit, and sprinkle little salt on it, voila, and the salt would make it taste better.
I am reminded by this long-time colleague of mine how he used to crack us up! He is one of those guys you don’t want to joke about. Because when it was your turn for him to joke about you, you have got to be ready to be embarrassed, in a joking way of course, and most of the time in front of other people. Anyway, he has these two young adorable sons, and they all look like him. But there was this one time a while ago; he made a joke that he will never check his children’s DNA tests to prove that his sons are his children. He said that, “If my wife said my children are my children, then why should I go and check for their DNA tests? If she said they are my children, then they are my children.” And I remember how few people reacted the other day when he said this. They told him, he was only saying that because his children looked like him, if the cards were different he wouldn’t have made such a statement. But as I look it at now, even then, I think there was a point he was making beyond this joke. I think he was trying to say that according to him even if his children did not look like him, or somehow had doubts whether they were his children, if his wife insisted that he was the father, and then he is the father. Perhaps because he loves his wife so much or the fact that to him it would be an honorable thing in a situation when a wife slips and got pregnant with another man, and decides to choose her husband to be the father of the child even if the real father was another man. But then again when I look at his point I still think the child and the biological parent at some stage have the right to know the truth. In many societies sometimes when doubts arise, we usually go for DNA tests. And trust me; all of us will be in shock when we go to a mango tree to get mango fruits, and instead see orange fruits. I mean, wouldn’t you be amazed to see a mango tree producing orange fruits?
Seriously, I have yet to see a mango tree produce orange fruits. Even in the Bible it says, you will know them by their fruits. The tree is always identified by its fruits; then if we humans were trees, all you need to look at is our fruits. Think about it; how do you know that I am generous? By my generous actions. How do you know that I am kind? By my kind actions. How do you know I am a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ? By my Christ-like character and actions.
Now, there are all kinds of fruits. For instance; the Bible mostly talks about the spiritual and character fruits. In the book of Galatians chapter 5 verse 19 to 23, it says that “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
For the physical fruits, there are also so many kinds depending on different areas in our lives. If we are trees, then how would you identify us by our fruits? According to the famous Tony Robbins, “You become what you do most of the time.” And then again, how would you identify musicians, actors, doctors, teachers, writers, bloggers, scientists, entrepreneurs, fashionista’s, innovators, and so on? By what they do most of the time or regularly…right?
Remember now, the seed doesn’t grow to a tree to bear a fruit without going through a process. You are seeing this person you admire today and you want to become like that person, but guess what? That person planted seeds or a seed long-time ago, and he or she watered them, pruned what needed to be pruned, cut what needed to be cut, and worked hard in caring for the seeds and today you are just seeing the tree full of fruits.
I have yet again to see a child born today, and by overnight became 50 years old. There is no such thing as an overnight success. You can’t plant a seed today, and by overnight it grows to a big tree with several fruits on it. So if you want those fruits that this person is harvesting right now, you have got to go through the process also. It may not be the same exact process, but something similar.
So what seeds are you planting every day to grow the tree you would like to harvest its fruits later on? What is it you are doing today to help you get closer to achieving your goals and dreams?
