How many of you have seen the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” already? Acted by the famous Will Smith and his son Jaden Christopher Smith, but this movie is a true story of the famous Chris Gardner, during of the time when he was a single father struggling to create a better life for himself and his son. According to Chris Gardener, since he was very young, he wanted to become a world-class into something, that was his dream, and he just needed to find out what it was. But also because of his own past experiences, he promised himself if he was ever going to have children, he was going to be a better father. So the story is about him struggling to live his dreams at the same time raise his son. There are many things we can all learn about from Chris Gardner’s story, whether it by reading his book, or watch the movie, whether we have children of our own, or not, single or married.
But this is what I have learned so far in my own life experiences; when you are pursuing your dreams and goals, to creating and living the life you want, you are going to face many things. So you need to prepare, and learn to grow a thicker skin.
1. Take one day at a time
Sometimes it can feel like it’s taking forever to get there, and there are lots of milestones to go through and accomplish what you want to see yourself accomplish. Remember that we walk and run, with one step at time, unless of course you want to jump…hahaha. So take one day at a time, one step at a time.
2. Stay focused
Get rid of all destructions that are not supporting your dreams and goals. Here is the question to ask yourself; “Is this thing or activity that you are doing today helping you get closer to achieving your goals and dreams? Is it aligning with your vision and mission?” If the answer is no, then you know what to do. It’s time to get focused.
3. Change is a must
As most of us know, change is necessary for personal growth. You are going to reach a point where in order to be where you need to be or successful, you need to be willing to change the way you have been doing things either it be for your personal or business growth, or you need to change wrong habits, and attitudes, business strategies, and et cetera. There are going to be so much to learn in order to create opportunities for ourselves, or for them to find us.
4. You just have to persevere
If it’s worth your time, money, happiness, health and wellness, personal and business growth, and if it’s life changing situation for you and your loved ones, then keep pursuing it. We have a God who gives us new hopes and chances every day. Everyday can be a new day, another chance, or the day of our breakthrough. You never know, one more tweak can make a difference. If it’s worth it, we need to keep on persisting it, until we make it. Besides, there is this famous quote that says, “Successful people hang on when everybody else has let go.”
5. Action, action, more action
You can desire all you want. You can have a list of so many ideas, but do you know that ideas are just ideas without a plan of execution? Make a plan and take action, series of actions. If the first plan and action did not work, then find another one until you get the results you want. We can find anything we want to know on how to improving ourselves through Internet search engines, Google for instance or Bing.
6. You are going to face criticism
And not all of them are going to be constructive. Unfortunately, some of them are going to destruct you or lead you astray, and once you find out, perhaps it will be too late to correct the damage that it has caused you. We are living in the world where some people want what you have, and if they can’t have it, they don’t want you to have it too, and so do what they can, sometimes diplomatically and very subtle, to make sure you do not succeed. It’s a sad situation, that’s why we need to ask God for guidance and protection always, because He sees what we cannot see. And remember, nobody can make you inferior unless you let them. Stand your ground; know who you are, your values, and focus more on your vision, mission, dreams, and goals.
7. You are going to face obstacles
That has nothing to do with destructive criticism, but have a lot to do with whatever you are trying to achieving. There is this quote by Bunker Hunt that says, “To be successful you must decide exactly what you want to accomplish, and then resolve to pay the price to get it.” There are so many things that can keep you from succeeding. It can be because of insufficient funds or capital, world changing events, time management, your competition if let’s say it has to do with business, it can be your health, or lack of knowledge and skills because you don’t know better, or your own personal struggles and insecurities, and so on. All of these can be obstacles that can get on your way, and the price you need to pay to achieve your dreams and goals.
With all that being said, it’s all up to us to decide how we are going to live our today to create our tomorrow that we desire or imagine for ourselves. Yes, it looks like hard work. But would you rather deal with all the hard work, or deal with the fact that you never gave it a try?
