Your Attitude is Your Altitude

How many of you have seen the movie “The Man in The Iron Mask?” It’s one of those best movies of all time. The Queen of France who was married to the King Louis XIII gave birth to twin boys (Both played by Leonardo DiCaprio).  In order to avoid the controversy in the future of who is going to be the next King Louis XIV, the Queen secretly decided to hide one of the twins to be raised and taken care of somewhere else. Now, it came a time where The Kingdom of France was under the reign of young King Louis XIV, and the movie shows that King Louise XIV, the twin who was raised to be a King was very cruel and self-centered. The people of the Nation or Kingdom of France did not like him; one of the reasons for instance was because he was distributing rotten food to the citizens. There were only few people who knew about the other twin brother. Apparently the cruel King Louis XIV was one of them, he also knew that he had a twin brother, therefore during his reign; he kept his twin brother imprisoned. He even made a custom-made iron mask for him to wear all the time so that no one could be able to see his face. Since they were twins, they look very similar; he didn’t want the People of France to know their King had a twin brother. There were three retired Musketeers who served during the reign of King Louis XIII. These Three Musketeers also knew that the cruel King had a twin brother imprisoned in this highly monitored and confidential jail. They were also tired of this young King XIV ruling, so they made a plan to substitute the twins. Since they looked alike, therefore the nation of France and the people under France governance wouldn’t even know there has been a substitute. So the Three Musketeers broke into this jail and managed to rescue the other twin to be King. They also managed to take off the iron mask from his face, groomed him, taught and trained him how to be a King until it was time to make a switch.  A time came, there was going to be a ball party at a King’s Palace, so the Three Musketeers decided this ball party will a perfect timing and chance for them to switch the twins. And so they managed to do it. But during the ball party before the Musketeers managed to leave and escape from the King’s Palace with the cruel King after they have made the switch, while they were celebrating just to make the story short, something happened. Even the people who came at the ball noticed there was something different with their King that day. Not because of his face or appearance, but because of the way he handled the situations during the ball when that something happened. They noticed he was kind, and considerate. Well, at the end of the story even though the Three Musketeers managed to substitute the twins, it wasn’t easy for them to get through the King’s Palace guards, commanders, or soldiers. It’s really an interesting story and movie to watch.

I was listening to Pastor John Maxwell this other day; it was a YouTube video actually, and he said, “Attitude is a difference maker. Even though attitude isn’t everything, since it cannot replace confidence, or competence; but attitude is the main thing that will make a difference in your life.”

You may have all the qualifications, but you have this one thing missing; a better attitude to get things done, or to cooperate with others, or to handle situations. Sometimes we may lose or miss opportunities just because our attitudes are not right.  Some people will even develop bad reputations because of their attitudes. Even though you may look like you are really ambitious person, but having a reputation where people call you a ‘Barracuda,’ how many of you know that is not a really good thing?

The Bible tells us God expect us to behave right regardless of our circumstances, or situations. To the point where as if God is more concerned about how we live our lives than what we achieve. In other words if what we want to achieve is going to cause us to live a more wicked life, or make us to continue behaving badly, then I think God will be more interested in molding us to be better people and to develop Christ-like characters, but at the same time working to help us to achieve the things we have asked Him or He has in store for us.

In the Bible the book of Luke chapter 6, reading from verse 27 to 29, Jesus said, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.” It feels like what Jesus said are impossible things to do, but if we submit to God’s ways, He will give us the grace to do them regardless how impossible they may seem. It may not be easy, but it will come a time we will get it right. Besides Jesus wouldn’t told us to do them if He knew they were impossible, may be hard to do, but they are possible.

You can have two candidates during job interview, both qualified for the job, but let’s say one of them has been a little bit rude during the interview while the other has been more well-mannered. If you were the interviewer, who do you think you would have hired knowing you are going to be her or his boss? You will definitely smell trouble from the beginning from one of the candidates.

Even though there could be circumstances where people are desperate therefore do not care about the attitude of the person as long as the person could get the job done, but most of the time having a wrong or bad attitude will not get you anywhere. When it comes to your promotion, you may be bypassed because of your attitude.

Let’s say there are these two stores or shops located next to each other, both selling same or similar electronic devices and gadgets products. One store, their customer service is outstanding. The minute you walk into the store you are greeted with a welcoming environment even if you were window shopping that day and you didn’t plan to buy anything, the experience you got in the store for their customer service changed your mind to make a decision to buy at least something just because you were very impressed of the way they treated you as a customer. On the other hand, the neighbor store is totally another different experience. They don’t value or pay attention to their customers as much they should. They make difficult for them to shop in the store. Basically they have poor customer service and because of that it drives their customers away to decide to shop somewhere else. One day you visited your favorite store, the one with outstanding customer service and they didn’t have in stock the product you wanted to buy, therefore they suggested you should check to see if the next-door store has the product. Therefore you went to this store, and like so many other customers who have been there before, you also didn’t like the way they treated you as a customer. So you left and went back again to your favorite store and ask them to order the product and contact you when they re-stock it.

In life it’s very common for most of us when things do not go well in our lives to react with wrong attitudes. It’s not easy to maintain a positive attitude when everything that you expected to go well is falling apart. There is this phrase that says, “A positive attitude overcomes the tallest obstacles.” During our hard times, our attitudes can make a difference how we handle the situations. Usually our attitudes will determine the outcome of our entire experiences. A change of attitude to an already worse situation can help you see things in different perspective, help you become calmer. Maybe because you decided you were going to overcome your fears with faith, and change your entire outlook on how you should approach that worse situation.

Our attitudes can be our altitudes. Our attitudes can make the difference in a way that it can propel us to get the breakthrough that we have been waiting for so long. A positive attitude could be just what we need to raise our expectations, maybe we weren’t expecting so much therefore we need to develop an attitude of faith. A good attitude can be what we need to get that promotion, or hold on much longer, or what is required to handle a difficulty circumstance.
