Believe in Your Future Self

I like to encourage and motivate myself as well as other people to live to our greatest potential. But I don’t think I was born this way, it all started after I got tired and tired of the way things were going in my life, and it was time to do something about it. So, I became a believer of hope and future. I began to motivate myself to keep going and fight on, to make things better for myself and others, even if sometimes it’s just a glimpse of hope that is required for me to encourage change and make things turn around for the best. Imagining and hoping for a better future became two things that I practice more often. One, it’s because when I envision about my future self and what I want in my future, it basically gives me hope, and makes my current situations and realities imaginary irrelevant, and that’s good for a start. Two, is because experts say, ‘your imagination is everything’ when it comes to live to your full and greatest potential.

From my own experiences I have learned that the best way to imagine your future self is to know who you are first and what you want. When you know who you are, then you know who you are not. When you know what you want, then you know what you don’t what in your life. Once you are clear of who you are and what you want in life, not only your imagination will be clear, but your vision for your life, family, and business for instance, will be clear as well.

As seen in most businesses, they usually display their vision and mission statements, purposes, and goals to tell their customers who they are and what they stand for as institutions. This is because such information is very important to display. Customers need to know who you are as a company, what you are serving, offering, and providing. And what it does is that, it also provides direction, not only to your customers, but also to your staff or employees, and as an entity. It also gives you are identity and limit others to assign other identities to you. When you don’t know who you are, it is easy for fall for anything, or to allow others to ascribe any identity to you, shape, or change you to someone they want you to become.

When a camera is out of focus, usually if you take a picture, its image will be unclear and blurry, or vague. Therefore, in order to get better images, pictures, or videos, we will put our cameras in focus mode. Just like the camera, our success depends on the clarity of our visions, missions, purposes, identities, and etc. When we don’t have directions for our future selves, whether it be personal or for the company, it is easy to lose focus. But the more we get focused and clear, the more likely we will succeed.

Not that recently I got to watch this Philippine’s series called ‘Bridges of Love.’ I was going to the kitchen the other day, it was during the weekend, and as I was walking by, in the living room I noticed this friend that I am living with attentively watching this TV series. I was very busy, so I just passed by the living room, and continued to mind my own business. On the following weekends, I kept noticing the patterns; the same time, every weekend she would be in the living room watching this TV series. I would be passing by in the living room, and I would see her waiting eagerly for it to start. One day I said to myself, let me also sit down and found out what I have been missing. So, I sat down, and I waited for it. The reason I am reminded of ‘Bridges of Love series,’ is because when I watched it that day, one of the characters acting as a father to this main character girl or woman called ‘Mia’ gave her daughter a  profound advice. There was this boy or man, ‘Gael’ who was interested in Mia for courtship. He just stopped by where Mia and her father were currently living; you know to see ‘the girl’ hahaha. Mia and her father were struggling to make ends meet. The series showed that at the time Mia’s father was also sick, had some kind of disease or disorder, so in order to make ends meet and to manage to take care of her father, Mia became one of the dancers at this men’s night club to earn more income. She hated it, and was frustrated with everything. So when Gael came that day he kept telling her that ‘I love you Mia and I will take care of you.’ But saying that, it only made Mia upset because Gael also came from a poor family, he also was living a poverty life, so you can imagine. But also, Gael didn’t know what Mia was doing just to make ends meet to take care of her father and herself. And Mia didn’t want to tell him, because she was afraid if he would found out, he wouldn’t respect her, and continued to love her. Deep down, Mia also had true feelings for Gael. So, abruptly, Mia shouted to Gael, ‘you are poor, how you are going to take care of me and my father?’ Sadly, disappointed, and hurt, without saying anything back to Mia, Gael left. But her father heard everything, so when Mia went back inside the house, as he was calming her daughter down, the father gave her daughter an advice and told her, not in the same exact words but similar, “Just because Gael is poor now, it doesn’t mean things won’t change. He is a good kid, and he has direction in life, and he knows where he is going. People like him usually end up succeeding in life.” And then the series showed on his way back home, Gael was furious, and therefore made a vow to himself that day he was going to be successful in his life so that he could take care of Mia. I wasn’t able to follow up with the series, but according to this friend, Gael became a very successful Engineer. In some stories, usually their inspirations would come or based on true stories.

Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” He also said, “Logic will get you from A to Z. Imagination will get you everywhere.”

Not only our lives are affected by our thoughts we think and our actions that we take, but also by our images, pictures, and stories we visualize and imagine for ourselves and hold in our minds, and tell ourselves concerning our future selves. We have got to know where we are heading, and our imagination can help us with it.

Successful people focus on what they want to see themselves becoming in their future selves. They imagine, and hold the pictures of what they want to see themselves doing, and the things they want to accomplish, improve, and becoming. Whatever you want to do, you want to see yourself there. And hold on to that vision that you want to see yourself in your near future, even when currently your reality do not match. And continue to practice to imagine your future self until it becomes true, even if it will take years for some of the things to come true.

They say, “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.” When you write your goals, and make plans for them, imagine that they are already accomplished. Every time you look at your goals, get in the feeling state as if you have already acquired them. The clear the picture it gets the possibility for them to come true. When your imagination is clear, when the vision and picture is clear, it makes things seem possible. Successful people make time every day to imagine what they want to see them achieving, accomplishing in their near future. And they make plans to achieve them.

Successful people believe in their future selves and constantly visualize what they want to become, and accomplish. And in order to make things happen, they also write down their dreams, visions, goals and their action steps for them to act on to accomplish their goals, on daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
