Okay, so I am not there yet, but this is what I have learned through my own journey and others through my observations and researching, there are ways a person can find and discover his or her purpose. I mean, this is not something that is going to take a few months to figure out; it’s a process. God has a program for His people, some find out from very early on while they are really young, others in their adulthood. The way I see it, as long as you have found and discover your purpose and be able to live it, that’s all matters.
As far as I am concerned, even if it may take you a lifetime to find and discover your true and God-given purpose, it’s far worth it than not knowing it at all. If you ask me, real prosperity and success is when you can accomplish God’s Will and Purpose for your life.
For many successful people, one of the reasons they are successful is because they have discovered their purposes in life. They have figured out why they are here on planet Earth. They have discovered their callings, what they really want in life, and the things they are passionate about, and so on.
Once you know your purpose in life, it will give you that stability that you need in life. When storms come in your life, your purpose will hold you steady and help you get focused, because you will have confidence based upon the knowledge you have concerning your purpose in life.
What is your purpose? You can say that your purpose is your reason for living. But also it can be your God’s assignment on Earth and for your life. I truly believe that as long as you have God’s breath, you have a purpose here on Earth and in your life, and it’s up for you to discover it.
I mentioned before that God is a purposeful God. For everything He created and made has a purpose. I gave an example of us human beings, our bodies for instance; our hands, mouths, ears, I mean everything, all of our organs, they all have purposes and functions. So you also, as a whole human being, you do have a purpose.
So how do you discover your purpose? Well, I have come up with five ways you can discover your purpose even though there could be more than these five ways.
- Through Your Passion
If you could spend your life doing one thing for example; what would it be? What do you really love doing? What is it that is moving you every day? Your passion could be something born inside you and you can’t help it but explore and do it.
For example; the passion of Jesus Christ was to do The Will of His Father, our Heavenly Father. In the book of John chapter 4 verses 31 to 36, it records that “Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.” But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.” “Did someone bring Him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the Will of God, Who sent Me, and from finishing His work. You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!”
It might take a while for you to figure out your passion in life, but if you have one it’s easy to notice it. So it may take you a while until you know you are passionate about something. In the book of Psalm chapter 37 verse 4, it says “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” You can pray to God to help you reveal the desires of your heart, and His desires for you that He has put inside you. And again, it’s a process, a well invested process.
2. Through Your Gifting and Uniqueness
I truly believe that every man is gifted with something. God is very generous. Everybody has a unique gifting deposited by God inside them. Again, it’s up to you to figure out what it is. You can pray to God to reveal it to you. I mean, it’s very important to find it, in the book of Proverbs 18 verse 16, it says that “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” Your gift is your ticket to discover another world for you, and can create big opportunities for you. That’s why you have got to find and discover it.
Your talents, and the skills you have acquired, if you nurture them, all of these have the ability also to create big opportunities for you in life. God can lead you to learn, nourish, and acquire some of the talents and skills you need in life because He has plans for you to use them in your life. But usually, it is your gift that is connected to your God’s calling and purpose. Your acquired talents and skills can get you a job, a career, but your God-given gifts can get you to your destiny.
In the Bible in the book of Genesis chapter 41, it was because of Joseph’s gifting of interpreting dreams that led him to the palace to become in position of authority to help the entire land of Egypt and to save them from the severe famine that was coming throughout the world during that time. I’m sure Joseph was able to do many things, through his life experiences perhaps he has acquired skills and talents along the way, but when it came to his great destiny and purpose, it was his God-given gift that led him there.
In the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 12 verses 4 to 11, for example, it says “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”
3. Through What You Hated, or Happened to You, or Your Struggles and Problems
Maybe you hated what happened to you when you were young. Maybe you hated how you grew up, perhaps you were mistreated. Nelson Mandela from South African nation and Moses from the Bible, Israel nation, are good examples of this. They both became great men God used to accomplish His purpose on those nations and the people. Both of them they hated racism and slavery. This is what I have noticed; if it’s your God-given purpose and destiny, then it’s yours. Even after 27 years of imprisonment, it didn’t stop Nelson Mandela to become the president of his country. Just imagine how he survived his years in jail and imprisonment. Like I said before once you know your purpose in life, it will give you that stability that you need in life. When storms come in your life, your purpose will hold you steady.
Moses also did not like the oppression of Israel People in Egypt. Even after what he has done, God used Moses and sent him back to Egypt where he grew up to demand the release of the Israelites from slavery. The Bible records in Exodus chapter 2 that Moses was adapted by Pharaoh’s daughter, the princess of the king of Egypt. But even though he was raised in the king’s palace as a prince, Moses hated to see how his own people being mistreated.
In the book of Exodus chapter 2 verses 11 to 15, it records that “In the course of time Moses grew up. Then he went to see his own people and watched them suffering under forced labor. He saw a Hebrew, one of his own people, being beaten by an Egyptian. He looked all around, and when he didn’t see anyone, he beat the Egyptian to death and hid the body in the sand. When Moses went there the next day, he saw two Hebrew men fighting. He asked the one who started the fight, “Why are you beating another Hebrew?” The man asked, “Who made you our ruler and judge? Are you going to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought that everyone knew what he had done. When Pharaoh heard what Moses had done, he tried to have him killed. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian.”
Later on the angel of the Lord appeared to Moses, speaking to him from within a burning bush. It records in the book of Exodus chapter 3 verses 1 to 10, “Moses was taking care of the sheep of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. As he led the sheep to the far side of the desert, he came to Horeb, the mountain of God. The Messenger of the Lord appeared to him there as flames of fire coming out of a bush. Moses looked, and although the bush was on fire, it was not burning up. So he thought, “Why isn’t this bush burning up? I must go over there and see this strange sight.” When the Lord saw that Moses had come over to see it, God called to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses!” Moses answered, “Here I am!” God said, “Don’t come any closer! Take off your sandals because this place where you are standing is holy ground. I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, “I have seen the misery of My people in Egypt, and I have heard them crying out because of the slave drivers. I know how much they’re suffering. I have come to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good land with plenty of room for everyone. It is a land flowing with milk and honey where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites live. I have heard the cry of the people of Israel. I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them. Now, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh so that you can bring My people Israel out of Egypt.”
And we all know the famous story of Moses and how God used him in a great mighty way. To you it maybe you were an orphan and you didn’t like how you were raised and went through, now that you are older, you decide to start your own orphanage because you feel like God has blessed you and has spoken to you to help orphans because you know how they feel and their experience of what they are going through. Myself for example; I hated how I have wasted my life without even have any accomplishments and achievements to back up all this time that I have wasted in my life. I hated how I worked for other people settling for less, feeling helplessness. God was speaking to me within me that He has so much in store for me, there is some greatness within me, and I was living below my potential. Therefore, one of my visions became to live to my full potential. I realized that I was not living to my full potential. I even have a podcast called Live to Your Full Potential.
4. Through Heavenly Vision or Dream
Friends, God speaks to people through visions and dreams. And when you get that encounter with God, your entire life will change. One good example was how Apostle Paul encounters the Lord Jesus, this was after He already ascended to heaven. Apostle Paul was persecuting the followers of The Lord Jesus; this is when he was called Saul before his name changed to Paul.
In the book of Acts chapter 9 verses 1 to 16, it records that “Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers. So he went to the high priest. He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them—both men and women—back to Jerusalem in chains. As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting Me?” “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the One you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” The men with Saul stood speechless, for they heard the sound of someone’s voice but saw no one! Saul picked himself up off the ground, but when he opened his eyes he was blind. So his companions led him by the hand to Damascus. He remained there blind for three days and did not eat or drink. Now there was a believer in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, calling, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord!” he replied. The Lord said, “Go over to Straight Street, to the house of Judas. When you get there, ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying to Me right now. I have shown him a vision of a man named Ananias coming in and laying hands on him so he can see again.” “But Lord,” exclaimed Ananias, “I’ve heard many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem! And he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon Your Name.” But the Lord said, “Go, for Saul is My chosen instrument to take My message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel. And I will show him how much he must suffer for My Name’s sake.”
I mean, it’s an interesting story. Apostle Paul’s calling was a serious command from the Lord, there was no discussion. In verse 6, The Lord told him, “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” If you have notice also the last sentence, it records Ananias said The Lord said “And I will show him how much he must suffer for My Name’s sake.” Now that is a command. It doesn’t mean The Lord didn’t forgive him or loved him; in fact the New Testament is filled with Apostle Paul letters and books. You can’t read the New Testament Bible today, and miss Apostle Paul writings. He even said in the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verse 10 that “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them–yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” I know this is far outside the topic, but what also we can learn through this passage is that don’t persecute the followers or the people because when you persecute them, you are persecuting the leader. Another thing we learn is that don’t ever think after you have made so many mistakes God cannot forgive you and use you. It’s not always the case.
5. Through The Word of God
If you are Christian for instance, first of all, in order to know God’s Sovereign Will and Moral Will, and to know Him, you have got to read the Bible. As you continue to spend time to knowing God, reading the Word of God, through the Bible, as you do that God can speak to you and reveal things concerning your life and your purpose through His promises, and Will.
There are so many things to know about ourselves and how to deal with our situations and what God says about us, and you can get most of the answers you need through the Word of God. You need to know what God says concerning your life.
In the Bible it says God’s Word brings light to your circumstances, situations, and your life. In the book of Psalm 119 verse 130, it says, “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” Another translation says, “The revelation of Your words brings light and gives understanding to the inexperienced.”
One thing I have learned is that being born-again Christian was my access to the discovery of my purpose and destiny. Once I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in my life, and received His Holy Spirit, things began to change for me. I was not the same person anymore. My priorities changed, my outlook on life changed, and et cetera.
The blessings and promises of God are concealed in The Word of God. So as you read, learn, and study the Word of God, which is found in the Bible, you will discover what belongs to you. The answers you are looking concerning your life today, they are found in the Bible, and also in spending quality time with The Holy Spirit of God in prayer, and in reading the Word of God.
That’s about it, five ways you can discover your purpose and be able to live a purposely driven life.
