Knowledge &Understanding | Get Wisdom

“Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave.” – Frederick Douglas

Before we know what wisdom, let’s find our why it’s important to have wisdom and the benefit we can get from having wisdom. Let’s see what the Bible says about wisdom.

In the book of Proverbs chapter 4 from verse 1 to 12, it says, “Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, and give attention to know understanding; for I give you good doctrine: do not forsake my law. When I was my father’s son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, he also taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words; keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; she will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory she will deliver to you.” Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, and when you run, you will not stumble.”

From this Bible passage we learn that wisdom is a principal thing. Wisdom is first in order of importance; wisdom is an important key. Therefore get wisdom; get knowledge and get understanding of it. And when you embrace wisdom it will promote you, it will make you shine. Wisdom will you lead in right paths so that when you walk or run, you will not stumble.

Another Bible passage that emphasize of the importance of having wisdom is in the book of Proverbs 8 from verse 10 to 21, and it says, “Receive my instruction, and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; for wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her. I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength. By me kings reign, and rulers decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, all the judges of the earth. I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver. I traverse the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice, that I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries.”

Wisdom is something isn’t it? The Bible you need wisdom to reign. “By wisdom kings reign, and rulers decree justice. By wisdom princes rule, and nobles, all the judges of the earth.” It continues to saying that riches and honor are with those who have got wisdom, and not just temporary riches, but enduring riches. But also wisdom cause those who love it to inherit wealth, it looks to fill their treasuries. Wow, basically the wiser you are, the richer you are supposed to become. Mmh.., eye opening.

So what is wisdom? I Google the definition, one of them says, “Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise.” Another one said, “Wisdom is the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment.”

In the simplest explanations, wisdom is knowing what to do and doing it; knowing what to say or speak, and speaking or saying it; knowing what to write and writing it; knowing where to go and going there; but also knowing when to open your mouth and when to close it…hahaha. Having wisdom is about making right decisions and taking right actions.

It’s possible that out of ignorance you are not able to do something or get the results you want because you simply didn’t have the knowledge about how to do it, or when to do it, or if you were supposed to do it. Many people are destroyed or do not succeed because of lack of knowledge.

You could also know a lot and have a lot of information and knowledge into your disposal, but still not do something you know you are supposed to do, even if you know it’s the right thing to do. But if you know what to do and doing it, they say you are wise, or you have done a wise thing. You have got to practice and apply what you know.

That’s why they say knowledge plus action is equal to power. You have to implement the knowledge you know and the information you have acquired. Unless of course you are not capable of doing of what you know to do, perhaps because you don’t have enough resources such as enough capital to accomplish and fulfill it. But that shouldn’t be the reason for you not to do anything at all; you can always do what you can with the little resources you have.

Wisdom is not only obtained through personal experiences, but you can learn and study to gain and get more knowledge ahead of time through other people experiences, testimonies, discovery, and recordings. You don’t have to wait until something happens to you to decide to get the knowledge and understanding of it. You can definitely take business courses before you start your own business so that when you start it you know what to do by applying what you have learned those courses. It will be nice to travel the world and visit many of its interesting places; but you really don’t need to wait until you travel to know different parts of the world, different cultures, and learn about different things.

So we now know that before you can do something, you need to get the knowledge and understanding of how to do it. You need to feed your mindset with knowledge and understanding. You need to make it a goal for yourself that you are going to learn every day at least one thing new, something that you didn’t know before. You can subscribe online to educational programs of your interest, or take online courses, or buy teaching CDs, as a way to invest on your personal education. You can read educational books, articles, magazines, listening to audio teachings, video teachings, and so on for your personal and professional growth. You can do your own personal home studying. There is a wide range of choices of free online resources at you disposal, and all you need is internet.

Every day I like to program my mind and set the tone for the day with educational, motivational, inspirational, transformational, and crucial information for my personal and professional growth. Every morning I would spend at least thirty minutes feeding my mindset with faith uplifting messages. I have subscribed to a few YouTube Bible teaching channels, and all I have got to do is to click the play button on my phone to listen. I also like to read the Bible in the morning.

In the evening time I would also do the same thing, I would spend time reading maybe a book on certain topic, or articles, and watching or listening to teaching messages for at least one hour. It’s a routine I have established for myself for a while now so that I can invest on myself with knowledge and understanding.

You have got to develop the habit of learning something new every day and investing on your mindset by feeding your mind with knowledge and understanding. Make this habit your daily routine. It will change your life and have a profound impact on your life. Not only you will gain more knowledge, understanding, and make you a little wiser, it will help you be more positive, optimistic, and confident each day.

And if you find time an issue, you can split your day like me; morning and evening time to learn something new. You can decide every day you will read four pages of a book until you finish it. If you prefer listening to an audio book rather than reading it, then go for it. You can decide to read two articles on the area of your interest every day. You can subscribe to online educational programs and listen to one educational teaching every day. On your way to work, while you are in the car, or in the train, you can turn that moment your golden moment, and decide to listen to some of the teaching and uplifting messages of your favorite podcast.

Every day you can choose to get up earlier, two hours before you have to be at work, so that you could have at least half an hour to spend time investing in your mind, but also reading the Bible, the Word of God, the nourishment for your soul. In the book of Proverbs chapter 2 verses 1 to 11, it says, “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you.”

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things losers don’t want to do. So seek wisdom. Establish a habit and routine every day for you to acquire knowledge and understanding. And when you do it make sure you apply it into your life. As you apply it in your life and put it into practice, you become wiser. It will change your life. Wisdom will change your life.
