Cultivating Our Christian Walk

Every day we make sure we eat food to sustain our bodies, because we know if we don’t eat properly, not only our bodies will weaken, but it will also affect other areas of our lives too that depend on our activeness of our bodies in order to function. The same thing when it comes to our spirits and souls; we have to make time every day to eat and partake the rights things for our spiritual and mental growth. And we can do this on daily basis by spending time with The Lord God by praying, in praise, and worship to ignite the Presence of God in our lives, but also by reading the Bible where we can be fed The Word of God and wisdom on daily basis. In the book of Psalm chapter 22 verse 3, it says that God inhabits the praises of His people. When we praise Him in praise and worship songs and in prayer, He will come to join the celebration. In other words God loves to dwell where He is celebrated and wanted.

In the book of Matthew chapter 4 verse 4, The Lord Jesus said “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” It was during when He was fasting for forty days and forty nights and became very hungry. So the enemy of God came to test Him with a temptation saying “If He is the Son of God, He should tell the stones to become loaves of bread.” Because he knew Jesus was very hungry and perhaps very weak in the body, so the enemy wanted Jesus to break the fast and loose the test of what He went to the wilderness for. And I think He was fasting and praying, preparing for His Ministry because after He won the test on the wilderness, the Bible records when He left there, The Lord Jesus officially started His Ministry. So even though The Lord Jesus was hungry and weak physically, but in the Spirit, He was very strong. Therefore He replied and quoted to the enemy the Scripture that “It is written; people do not depend on bread alone to live, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

God is amazing. I mean, no matter how cute and attractive your body can be, it won’t be as much valuable as your spirit self. The Lord Jesus said in the book of John chapter 4 verse 24 that “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” So that should be an eye opener to us. God is Spirit and those who worship Him must do it in spirit, and truth.

Do you know that when we speak, it is our spirits that speak, and not our bodies? In fact the Lord Jesus said in the book of John chapter 6 verse 63 “The Spirit is the One who gives life. The flesh doesn’t help at all. The words that He has spoken to us are spirit and are life.” In other words, we can say that even the words we speak are spirit and can give life to something.  Sometimes the words we speak can work as seeds in the spiritual realm to manifest things in the physical realm. It is the spiritual world that creates the physical world. Just because you don’t see them in the natural or physical world, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Just because you don’t see heaven, it doesn’t mean heaven doesn’t exist. Just because you don’t see the baby in the pregnant mother in her first trimester for instance, it doesn’t mean the baby does not exist. It looks like almost everything starts from the spiritual realm, perhaps in a thought form from what we think, or word form from what we speak. The Bible says in the book of Genesis when God created the heaven and earth and all within it, including us, He spoke, and eventually things manifested. And only God knows the mystery of how long it really took and how He did it precisely.

In fact the subject of spirit is very broad. I heard some pastors saying that, fear is a spirit; poverty is a spirit; fornication is a spirit; lying is a spirit; death is a spirit; evil is a spirit; the devil or also known as the enemy of God is a spirit, racism is a spirit, rebellion is a spirit, witchcraft is a spirit; and so as all kinds of other spirits…hahaha. And they say that if you see someone is behaving certain way, you need to rebuke the spirit and power behind it that is causing and influencing someone to behave that way, and not the person. Because the fight goes beyond the physical realm; you have to start from the root, in the spiritual realm. Remember now, it is the spiritual that creates the physical. Meaning that, by the time it appears in the physical realm, it already existed in the spiritual realm.

In the book of Ephesian chapter 6 verses 10 to 18, Apostle Paul said, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of Salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”

So Apostle Paul said our real struggles and battles are rooted in the spiritual realm therefore we need to put on the full armor of God. There are some battle tools we are going to need and apply in order to win, and are different from what we use to fight with in the real world or our realities …hahaha. One, we need to the helmet which is the gift of Salvation. So you have to invite Lord Jesus into your life as your Savior and The Lord of your life. The Lord Jesus is our breastplate of righteousness.  We receive righteousness of God, and are made righteous through faith and The Lord Jesus Christ. Two, we need to take the sword of the Spirit, which is The Word of God and truth, and know what it says.  In Matthew 4 chapter 4, The Lord Jesus replied to the enemy with Scripture, The Word of God, and said it is written. That’s why we need to read the Bible so that when these temptations come whether in a thought form, or through another person, we have a Scripture that contains the truth, the belt that we need to buckle around our waist, to reply to that situation as it comes. Third, we need to take the shield, which is faith and use it to extinguish all the arrows from the evil one. No matter how long the battle or struggle, with unwavering faith we overcome. Forth, we need to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests because when we pray we ask for heaven to intervene, the extra help from on high. And fifth, we need to stand with our feet and fully prepared from the gospel of peace.

So in order to win these battles that we may be facing in our everyday life as Christians we need to spend quality time with God. For us to live a real Christian life, we must cultivate it. We have to consciously walk with God just like when we are cultivating any other relationship in our lives such as our relationships with our spouses, children, parents, siblings, friends, and so on. Just like our bodies need food, water, vitamins, and so on, it is not just about going to Church and Bible study once a week, but reading the Bible, spending time in praise and worship, in prayer, and maybe in listening to Bible teachings and programs on regular basis, but in service with our time and substances. When we do that we make our spirits consciously alive with God. And some of us know that what we frequently give attention to, usually will expand and we will eventually start desiring it to a point it becomes a habit to us.

If you ask many successful people that you know, and they will tell you they don’t find time, they make time to do things they do, and live the life they live. We all have 24 hours a day. And we are all busy, but some choose to be busy with what that matters in their lives. If food matters in your life, you make time to eat it. The same thing with spending quality time with God on regularly basis; you can choose to reserve time every day to get to know your God and creator. You can start small; thirty minutes a day is much better than not spending time at all. And the good thing is that spending quality time with God is for our own good and benefit. All God has to benefit is to have us, His children back into His arms again.
