Overcome Unbelief

We are continuing with the subject of faith. We now know faith is believing before seeing it. Faith is a replay of what God has already said, told, or show us.

There is this story in the Bible about Priest Zechariah, John the Baptist Father, who was made mute by the Angel Gabriel because of his unbelief.

In the book of Luke chapter reading from verses 5 to 25, it records that “In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old. Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.” Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. When his time of service was completed, he returned home. After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days He has shown His favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

So we learn here sometimes unbelief has consequences. Why angel Gabriel made priest Zachariah silent? It’s because of his unbelief. The Bible says “The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

This is one example of unbelief that was recorded in the Bible. God wants us to believe Him and what He says. God sent angel Gabriel to tell Zachariah that he was going to have a son, and he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will be a joy and delight to him, and many will rejoice because of his birth. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

And Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” He didn’t know how it was going to happen, so he wanted a sign of how he can be sure of what the angel was telling him, ahead of time, because both him and his wife Elizabeth were very old and were childless and his wife Elizabeth was not able to conceive. And angel Gabriel said, okay, so you don’t believe me, here is the sign I will show you that what I say will come to pass; you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens.

I mean, Zechariah didn’t have to go through the mute experience. He could just saved himself and said ‘let it be according to the Will of GOD.” It was unnecessary for him to go mute.

God wants us to believe Him. It is also recorded in the Bible that even The Lord Jesus was very frustrated this one time because of our unbelief and  recorded saying, “You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?”

The Bible records in the book of Matthew chapter 17 verses 14 to 21 that “When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before Him. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to Me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

So the Lord Jesus told His disciples, they couldn’t drive it out because they had so little faith, but then again He said, the issue it’s not little faith, it’s your unbelief, because if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, that minimum requirement, it can do the work.

The same story in the book of Mark chapter 9 verses 14 to 29 says that “And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude around them, and scribes disputing with them. Immediately, when they saw Him, all the people were greatly amazed, and running to Him, greeted Him. And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?” Then one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.” He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”

Remember now, this is the same event recorded by two different narrators. It’s the event that happened in the days of the Lord Jesus while He was here physically on planet earth, so both Apostles Matthew and Mark recorded the event according to their perspective and their style of telling the story. But also depending on the different Bible versions and translations, that’s why some parts of the story may differ.

So we see that both the father of the boy and the disciples were facing unbelief issues and that’s why the boy couldn’t not be healed. The Lord Jesus saw the unbelief of the father of the boy when he asked Him, “But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” And the Lord Jesus answered him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” The Bible says, immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

We can pray to God to help us with unbelief. Another thing we can learn is that when the disciples asked the Lord Jesus, “How come they couldn’t drive it out?” The Lord Jesus answered them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”

I have done my little research, and basically what I have found out is that from this scripture, the Lord Jesus was implying that there are some problems, situations, or impure spirits in our lives, can only come out or be resolved by prayer and fasting. Therefore, we need to pray and fasting. And the reason we need to pray and fasting, it’s not so that we can move God. He is not depending on our capacities, He is waiting on our faith to move, because it takes faith to see the promises of God practically delivered in our lives.

We need to fast and pray so that we can get rid of our unbelief. When we fast and pray, we get to align with God’s Will and hear Him, so that we can believe God, the One Who has promised to help us with our situations. God is pleased by our faith. Our faith moves God to answer our prayers because God looks for His Word and promises to perform it.

Several times the Lord Jesus performed miracles and said “According to your faith let it be done to you.” One example we see is of the blind Bartimaeus, in the book of Mark chapter 10 verses 46 to 52. It says that “Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and His disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.”

Some people receive their miracles immediately; others have to wait until the appointed time. Depending on what you are believing God for, just believe on what God has promised. It may manifest tomorrow, next month, next year, ten years, hahaha, but receive it today by faith. Just let your heart be ready to receive it; don’t calculate how and when is going to come.

In the book of Mark chapter 11 verses 24 and 25, the Lord Jesus said, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

So all you have to do is to get hold of the promises of GOD and don’t let go no matter what the circumstances. All you have to do is seeing yourself coming out of your situation that is facing you. If it’s healing, see yourself already healed, and any moment, your body is going to manifest the healing you have believed. If it’s getting out of debt, see yourself it has been paid off; in one way or another God will provide solutions for money channels for you to pay it off, or God will change your debtors’ minds to cancel your debts. Whatever way it may come, your goal is to get rid of the debt.

Just be-careful when you are claiming and believing for the things you want God to help you with. If you are looking for a wife for instance, don’t come to me and say Helen, the Lord told me, I’m your husband. Well, maybe you think He has told you, but He hasn’t told me yet. I don’t know about you; I don’t want nobody husband, nobody money, or house. I told God a while ago, with me, it has to be customized, and very clear to me. I don’t want no puzzles anymore. God is not the author of confusion. If it keeps confusing me, I rather wait until GOD clarifies it because I only want what is mine that I have asked the LORD. I roll like that. Why? Because I believe if it really comes from GOD, I know it will be good; because GOD is always good.

By the way, please don’t bother to ask the LORD for me, I’m already taken, there is already special one for me that GOD is preparing as I’m being prepared for him right now as I write. I have been thanking GOD for him even before I found him. And it wasn’t easy. I found him a couple of years ago in a strangest and shocking way, Mr. Mclee…hahaha. I had to really fight a fight of faith and prayed a lot because the hand of the devil, the kingdom of darkness, in so many reasons didn’t want us to meet and be together.

Many of us forget one thing about this promise of Mark 11: 24-25; there is a condition there which is to forgive others so you can be forgiven. Basically we need to walk in love.

Faith works by love. It is GOD’s Will to walk in love. So don’t claim somebody else’s wife, or house, or job. Seek GOD first to reveal if it’s yours and has got your name on it. God will not ask us to steal somebody’s rights for instance, because you read the scripture saying all you have to do is just receive it or claim it and it’s yours. Read the entire scripture passage to get understanding first, and then ask the LORD to reveal to you, your customized answer. As they say “What goes around, comes around.”
