Hi guys, we are continuing with our series “The Kingdom Of GOD In.” Let’s first read the book of Acts chapter 19 from verses 11 to 20. The Scripture says “God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles. When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled. A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the Name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, “I command you in the Name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!” Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this. But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, “I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?” Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered. The story of what happened spread quickly all through Ephesus, to Jews and Greeks alike. A solemn fear descended on the city, and the Name of the Lord Jesus was greatly honored. Many who became believers confessed their sinful practices. A number of them who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars. So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect.”
If you still think that there are no such things as evil spirits and sorcery, then I don’t know which world you are living today.
The Bible says, God anointed Apostle Paul to the point that even when handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled. The Lord Jesus Christ was very glorified through Apostle Paul. Miracles were happening and a number of people who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars. And the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect.
Today we are going to discuss and learn about mammon spirit.
- Mammon spirit
This spirit has to do with the love of money over God. Yes, we are going there, just give me a chance to explain. I did a little research online on the word “Mammon,” and one explanation said Mammon is the name of the fallen angel, the god who deceives people to have confidence in money than God, and they have power through money. Basically Mammon is the god and spirit of the excessive love over material things and possessions, and the love of money. The god of greed.
The Lord Jesus spoke a lot about the spirit of Mammon.
The first example is in the Book of Matthew chapter 6 verse 24, in New King James Bible translation, the Lord Jesus said “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” The same Scripture in the Amplified Bible version says that “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord].
The second example is in the book of Luke chapter 16 from verses 1 to 15, in Amplified Bible translation it records that “Now Jesus was also saying to the disciples, “There was a certain rich man who had a manager [of his estate], and accusations [against this man] were brought to him, that this man was squandering his [master’s] possessions. So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management [of my affairs], for you can no longer be [my] manager.’ The manager [of the estate] said to himself, ‘What will I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig [for a living], and I am ashamed to beg. I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from the management, people [who are my master’s debtors] will welcome me into their homes.’ So he summoned his master’s debtors one by one, and he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of [olive] oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ And his master commended the unjust manager [not for his misdeeds, but] because he had acted shrewdly [by preparing for his future unemployment]; for the sons of this age [the non-believers] are shrewder in relation to their own kind [that is, to the ways of the secular world] than are the sons of light [the believers]. And I tell you [learn from this], make friends for yourselves [for eternity] by means of the wealth of unrighteousness [that is, use material resources as a way to further the work of God], so that when it runs out, they will welcome you into the eternal dwellings. “He who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little thing is also dishonest in much. Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of earthly wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you? And if you have not been faithful in the use of that [earthly wealth] which belongs to another [whether God or man, and of which you are a trustee], who will give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand devotedly by the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon [that is, your earthly possessions or anything else you trust in and rely on instead of God].” Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were sneering and ridiculing Him. So He said to them, “You are the ones who declare yourselves just and upright in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts [your thoughts, your desires, your secrets]; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.”
In New Living Bible version, the same Bible passage says that “Jesus told this story to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a manager handling his affairs. One day a report came that the manager was wasting his employer’s money. So the employer called him in and said, ‘What’s this I hear about you? Get your report in order, because you are going to be fired.’ “The manager thought to himself, ‘Now what? My boss has fired me. I don’t have the strength to dig ditches, and I’m too proud to beg. Ah, I know how to ensure that I’ll have plenty of friends who will give me a home when I am fired.’ “So he invited each person who owed money to his employer to come and discuss the situation. He asked the first one, ‘How much do you owe him?’ The man replied, ‘I owe him 800 gallons of olive oil.’ So the manager told him, ‘Take the bill and quickly change it to 400 gallons.’ “‘And how much do you owe my employer?’ he asked the next man. ‘I owe him 1,000 bushels of wheat,’ was the reply. ‘Here,’ the manager said, ‘take the bill and change it to 800 bushels.’ “The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light. Here’s the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then, when your possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home. “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own? “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and scoffed at Him. Then He said to them, “You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.”
The third example is in the book of Luke chapter 12 verses 13 to 33. And the Bible says in Amplified version that “Someone from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or an arbitrator over [the two of] you?” Then He said to them, “Watch out and guard yourselves against every form of greed; for not even when one has an overflowing abundance does his life consist of nor is it derived from his possessions.” Then He told them a parable, saying, “There was a rich man whose land was very fertile and productive. And he began thinking to himself, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place [large enough in which] to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my storehouses and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many good things stored up, [enough] for many years; rest and relax, eat, drink and be merry (celebrate continually).”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own all the things you have prepared?’ So it is for the one who continues to store up and hoard possessions for himself, and is not rich [in his relationship] toward God.” Jesus said to His disciples, “For this reason I tell you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; or about your body, as to what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens, for they neither sow [seed] nor reap [the crop]; they have no storehouse or barn, and yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than the birds! And which of you by worrying can add one hour to his life’s span? So if you are not even able to do a very little thing [such as that], why are you worried about the rest? Consider the lilies and wildflowers, how they grow [in the open field]. They neither labor nor spin [wool to make clothing]; yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory and splendor dressed himself like one of these. But if this is how God clothes the grass which is in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You of little faith! So as for you, do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink; nor have an anxious and unsettled mind. For all the [pagan] nations of the world greedily seek these things; and your [heavenly] Father [already] knows that you need them. But [strive for and actively] seek His Kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid and anxious, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom. “Sell your possessions (show compassion) and give [donations] to the poor. Provide money belts for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing and inexhaustible treasure in the heavens, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.”
As you can see in each of these examples and Bible passages, the Lord Jesus discussed the issue of the Mammon spirit, what we need to do to overcome it, and how will you know you have been affected by it.
In the first example He just addressed that you cannot serve two masters; you have to choose one of them, but you can’t serve both. So it’s up to choose who is going to be GOD in your life; the real GOD, your Creator, the Most High GOD, or money basically.
In the second example, He said you cannot be devoted to money at the same time be devoted to GOD. He used another term and said you cannot serve God and be enslaved to money. Why? Because if you are enslaved to money you can even steal GOD’s money, for instance the Church money…hahaha, just kidding.
I mean, the Lord Jesus was talking about this unfaithful manager. Basically He said if you are unfaithful to your employer for instance at your workplace, the world riches, who then will be able to trust you with the true riches?
He said “Here’s the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. “No one can serve two masters.”
In another translation it says that “And I tell you [learn from this], make friends for yourselves [for eternity] by means of the wealth of unrighteousness [that is, use material resources as a way to further the work of God], so that when it runs out, they will welcome you into the eternal dwellings.”
So when you further the work of God, it’s a good thing. You will not waste your material resources because your will be doing and supporting something that pleases God and and you will be storing your treasures in Heaven.
GOD has to be the center of everything in our lives, including our money. Don’t tell GOD “Take my life, my husband life, my children’s life, ‘I commit us to You LORD,’ but please don’t take my money…hahaha.” I believe GOD wants us to commit everything under His care and guidance. He wants us to put Him our first priority over everything and everyone in our lives, including our financial area.
In the third example, He taught us that basically where our treasures are, there will our hearts be also. The movement of your money signifies the movement of your heart. Where your money goes, your heart is going. You exchange money for what you value, what you treasure. How do you know what you treasure the most? Just take a record of where you spend your money the most.
If you ask me, I will say, if you are not sure who you are serving, just commit your money to the LORD GOD. Tell Him in prayer, ‘my money is Your money, guide and order my steps on where to spend, invest on, and so forth.’ Because sometimes you may think GOD is the One, the Master of your life, but truth is money is still the driven factor in your life.
He also said believers are different from non-believers. We have a different system of obtaining things. In this system, God’s system, Kingdom of God’s system, its way of obtaining things is to seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness and ways of doing things. And when you [strive for and actively] seek His Kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. What are all these things? The things that we need or want that the pagans of the world greedily seek. We should not worry about these things for our Heavenly Father knows that we need them. He said life neither consists of, nor is it derived from our possessions. Basically life is not composed of material things, we should seek to be rich in our relationship toward GOD. We should share our blessings with others especially the poor, when we do that we are storing our treasure in Heaven, a safe place, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
I know some people may ask the question, is it really possible for a rich person to go to Heaven or enter the Kingdom of GOD?
Let’s go into the book of Mark chapter 10 verses 17 to 27. It says that “As Jesus was starting out on His way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’” “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” He told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!” This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God. In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”
So the answer is “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”
This man, when in other translations they used the term the “Rich Young Ruler” put his trust in his possession and wealth, and not in God. The Lord Jesus knew, so He revealed it to him and told him you have done well by keeping all other commandments, but there is one thing he lacked which is to trust God more than he trusted his wealth. The first of the Ten Commandments says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.” To this Rich Young Ruler, his wealth was everything to him. The Lord Jesus basically told him, in order to inherit eternal life, God had to be the center of his life and not his wealth. Unfortunately it was the test that this Young Ruler failed. I mean, it was one of the hardest tests that only those firmly trusting and relying on God as their only source of everything including their wealth may pass it.
Truth is that it’s only by the grace of God that we will be able to enter the Kingdom of God, because we are all short of God’s glory. In the book of Romans 3 chapter 23, it says, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” But the Lord Jesus assured us that what is impossible with us, it is possible with God, because all things are possible with God. Our God can do the impossible with, through, and in us.
Another thing we learn is that this Rich Young Ruler didn’t realize at the moment that if he ever happened to lose his money, he can make it again, because with God, all things are possible. How many people do you know who lost everything, and then were able to gain even more after they have lost everything? How many times in your life you thought this is it, I am not going to recover what I have lost, and then God surprises you beyond your imagination, and when you look back, you are amazed, because you are now more well off than you used to be or have? And you didn’t have to do anything wrong, to steal, or break the law to get it back. GOD is a GOD of restoration. The Lord Jesus said that whatever we give up for His sake, we will get a hundred times as many of what we have given up for Him.
If you continue in the book of Mark chapter 10 verses 28 to 31, it says that “Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow You,” he said. “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for My sake and for the Good News, will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life. But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.”
Basically if you give up anything for Jesus sake; give up your wicked ways, ungodly life, and make Him your first priority above anybody else in your love circle and family members, your time, and your properties, He promised that you will receive now a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution, in return, and in the world to come you will have eternal life.
The Bible says Father Abram, who later his name changed to Abraham, who GOD Almighty considered him as His friend, was wealthy. Abraham loved GOD to such a point there was a time GOD tested Abraham of his obedience toward Him and whether Abraham would completely obeyed GOD and placed Him above all else, even his own son, by commanding Abraham to offer his son Isaac whom he loved that GOD gave him as a promised son as a sacrifice, and the Bible says Abraham obeyed. And just he was about to sacrifice his son, God provided a ram for a burnt offering. You can read the entire story in the book of Genesis chapter 22 verses 1 to 19.
May be let’s look also in the Bible where it records that Father Abraham, the Father of faith as the Bible says was wealthy in those days.
One example is in the book of Genesis chapter 13 verses 1 and 9, it says “So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD. Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”
Take a look around even now, there are so many godly men and women who love GOD and make Him their first priority and the center of their lives, and are really doing well for themselves. I mean, I’m talking financially. So it’s possible to be rich and wealthy and still love GOD more than money.
If GOD has blessed you financially and then you forgot the things really matter to GOD, and turn your heart against GOD, maybe you don’t want to use your wealth to finance the things of GOD, the One Who gave you wealth, then it’s a problem. It’s very easy to be rich and wealthy and be carried away.
I truly believe GOD wants to bless us. And it is okay to ask GOD to bless us and make us a channel of His blessings to flow to others. GOD may want to bless us financially for so many reasons. One, because He loves us and wants us to partake and enjoy His blessings and goodness. When you are blessed with a big business for instance, it means that you are able to provide employment where others also get to meet their needs and wants for themselves and their families through your business. But also you will be able to give money to charities, to help the poor, orphans, widows, and all kinds of people who maybe in involuntary financial needs. You will be able to finance the Gospel and the affairs of GOD so that GOD’s mission on earth will be accomplished everyday easily.
GOD wants to bless us with wealth because He knows if He entrusts us with it, not only us, but so many others will benefit through us. It’s just that GOD doesn’t want us to make money and wealth the focus of everything. He said in the book of Matthew chapter 6 verse 33 to seek Him, His Kingdom, and Righteousness first, and all the things we seek and need will be given to us. He wants us to put Him first and make Him our main focus and first priority. As we seek Him first and follow His guidance, our steps will be blessed and our ways will be prosperous.
The fact is that even the Bible you are reading it costs money. The food you eat cost money. I mean, even the little things in life need money. So money is not sin, but just an instrument, a medium of exchange.
In the book of 3 John chapter 1 verse 2, it says that “Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually].”
GOD wants us to prosper in every area of our lives including financially. It’s just that He doesn’t want money to take His place and be the center of our lives and everything, because life is more than that. The Lord Jesus said we need to watch out and guard ourselves against every form of greed; for not even when one has an overflowing abundance does his life consist of, nor is it derived from his possessions. GOD wants us to control the money and not money to control us. He wants to be the master of our lives, and not money. So you really can’t serve two masters at the same time, you must choose one master.
Now we have got that clarification, let us pray for ourselves, families, relatives, and all our loved ones. Let us make GOD our Master and money our servant and ask GOD for His help to bless us financially.
- Heavenly FATHER, we humbly come before Your Throne of Grace to obtain Your Favor in every area of our lives, even financially LORD, our GOD.
